A four-bedroom home once owned by New York Yankees legendary first baseman Lou Gehrig came on the market last week asking $1.459 million. Located in New Rochelle, New York—just 14 miles north of Yankee Stadium, according to marketing materials—the 1895 home has been fully renovated since it last sold for $582,000 in 2019. “We completely restored the home, especially the wood components,” seller Ali Credendino told Mansion Global. (Ms. Credendino co-owns the property with her husband, Jonathan Credendino.) “We uncovered two sets of pocket doors on the first floor that were original to the home but had been covered up. And we restored the cedar lap siding all around the house that there are photos of Lou Gehrig working on when he owned the home.”

The home is located in the Residence Park neighborhood, which is known for period homes, according to marketing materials from listing agent Glorianne Mattesi of Douglas Elliman. Gehrig originally purchased the property in 1927 as a home for his parents within a short commute to Yankee Stadium. “I read that he bought it for his family as a Christmas present,” Ms. Mattesi told Mansion Global.

The home had fallen into disrepair in later years, and sold for just $303,000 in 2016, according to records. “We viewed it in 2016 when it was on the market and there was a lot of buzz about it being so low priced,” Ms. Credendino said. “We were outbid, so when it came back on the market, we jumped on it. We started work literally the day we closed and continued consistently until the day before the open house.”

The home is entered via a covered wooden porch with columns, listing photos show, and opens into a spacious entryway leading into the main level’s entertaining spaces, which include a living room with a fireplace as well as a formal dining room.

The sellers “preserved the character of the architecture, and both restored and renovated everything,” Ms. Mattesi said. “All of the woodwork on the front porch was restored, and all of the floors in the house. Even the stained glass windows around the front door in the foyer, they had [it] restored instead of removed.”

A spacious, updated kitchen with hardwood floors and stainless steel appliances is located adjacent to the dining room, according to listing photos. “We completely remodeled all four bathrooms and the kitchen,” Ms. Credendino said. “And we completely replaced all of the windows and doors for energy efficiency and security, while trying to stay true to the original look of the house and the time period.”

A primary bedroom features bay windows and a fireplace, according to photos, and an unexpected historical detail can be found in one of the home’s bathrooms. “When we bought the home there was a claw foot tub in the basement that we were told was the tub Lou Gehrig used to wash his uniforms,” Ms. Credendino said. “We restored it and put it in the first floor bathroom as kind of a show piece, it’s also fully functional.”
